What is it

RW2 files are the unprocessed sensor output from Panasonic Lumix cameras. Like all RAW formats, they preserve the full dynamic range and colour information captured by the sensor, giving photographers maximum flexibility when editing exposure, white balance, noise reduction, and colour grading in post-processing.

Panasonic's RW2 format is based on a modified TIFF container with proprietary compression. The files include the raw Bayer pattern data, a JPEG preview, comprehensive Exif metadata, and Panasonic-specific processing parameters. File sizes vary from 15-30 MB depending on camera model and resolution.

SILKYPIX (Panasonic's bundled RAW editor) handles RW2 natively, but most photographers prefer Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or darktable for their more advanced editing tools. For long-term archival, converting to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter ensures your RAW files remain readable regardless of future Panasonic software support.

FAQ
How do I open RW2 files?
Adobe Lightroom, darktable (free), and RawTherapee (free) all support RW2. SILKYPIX, bundled with Panasonic cameras, is another option.
What's the difference between RW2 and JPEG?
RW2 preserves all sensor data for maximum editing flexibility — you can adjust exposure by ±3 stops, change white balance, and recover highlights. JPEG is pre-processed and compressed, limiting editing range.
Should I convert RW2 to DNG?
For archival, yes. DNG is Adobe's universal RAW format with broad long-term software support. Adobe DNG Converter (free) handles the conversion. Keep originals until you've verified the conversion.
