What is a .pdf file?

Someone emailed you a contract, a receipt, a boarding pass, or a tax form. It arrived as a PDF because the sender needed it to look identical on your screen, your printer, and your phone — no matter what software you use. PDF locks a document's appearance in place. What you see is what everyone sees.

What most people don't realise is that PDFs are far more than flat pages. The format supports fillable forms, digital signatures, password encryption, embedded multimedia, and even JavaScript. Adobe invented it in 1993 and later handed it to ISO as an open standard, which is why every browser, phone, and operating system can open one without installing anything. Under the hood, a PDF is a structured object tree — not an image, not a Word file, but its own thing entirely.

For viewing, you already have what you need — your browser does it. For editing, Adobe Acrobat is the gold standard (subscription, naturally). Foxit is cheaper and perfectly capable. For quick operations like compressing, merging, splitting, or signing, fwip handles it locally without uploading your documents anywhere. The irony of PDF is that everyone knows how to open one but almost nobody knows how to make one do what they want.
