What is it

DFF and DSF both store the same DSD audio data — the difference is the container. DFF (DSDIFF) was the original container, designed by Philips for SACD authoring. DSF came later, designed by Sony, with the notable advantage of supporting ID3v2 metadata tags. Since music listeners generally want album art and track info, DSF has become the more popular format for consumer distribution.

You'll encounter DFF files in SACD rips, particularly older ones made before DSF became the preferred container. The audio quality is identical to DSF — both carry raw DSD bitstreams. The practical difference is metadata: DFF files typically lack album art and detailed tags, while DSF supports them natively.

The same players handle both formats: foobar2000 with the SACD plugin, Audirvana, Roon, and JRiver. Converting between DFF and DSF is lossless (just repackaging the same DSD data) and can be done with tools like dBpoweramp or foobar2000.

FAQ
What's the difference between DFF and DSF?
Both store identical DSD audio. The key difference is metadata support: DSF supports ID3v2 tags (album art, track info), DFF does not. DSF is preferred for consumer music distribution.
Should I convert DFF to DSF?
If you want metadata support (album art, tags), yes. The conversion is lossless — the DSD audio data is identical. Foobar2000 or dBpoweramp handle the conversion.
