What is it

You exported a run, ride, or hike from a fitness app and the file is a .gpx. GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is the universal format for GPS data — a track of latitude, longitude, elevation, and time coordinates that trace your path through the world.

GPX is XML-based and human-readable (open one in a text editor and you can literally read the coordinates). It supports tracks (recorded paths), routes (planned paths), and waypoints (individual points of interest). Every fitness device and app — Garmin, Strava, Komoot, AllTrails, Wahoo — can export GPX. This makes it the interchange format for GPS data, the same way CSV is the interchange format for tabular data.

Google Earth (free) displays GPX tracks on a 3D globe. Strava and Garmin Connect import GPX for analysis. AllTrails and Komoot import GPX for route planning. For quick viewing, online tools like GPS Visualizer display GPX files on a map in your browser. GPX is also used for geotagging photos, planning navigation routes, and sharing trail data.

FAQ
How do I view a GPX file on a map?
Upload to Google Earth, Google Maps (My Maps), or an online viewer like GPS Visualizer. Strava and Garmin Connect also import GPX files. For desktop viewing, GPXSee (free) and Google Earth Pro (free) work well.
Can I convert GPX to KML?
Yes. GPS Visualizer (web-based, free) converts GPX to KML and vice versa. Google Earth Pro also imports GPX and can save as KML. The conversion preserves tracks, routes, and waypoints.
