You found a .3gp file on an old phone, a backup from the mid-2000s, or a messaging app that still uses the format. 3GP was designed for 3G mobile networks — heavily compressed video and audio optimised for tiny file sizes, low resolutions, and the limited processing power of feature phones and early smartphones.
3GP uses a stripped-down version of the MP4 container with H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video and AMR audio — codecs chosen for their ability to produce watchable (if ugly) video at bitrates that 3G networks could handle. The resulting files are tiny but the quality reflects it: blocky compression artefacts, low resolution (176×144 was common), and muddy audio. The format was essential when bandwidth was measured in kilobits and phones had 2-megapixel cameras.
VLC plays 3GP files on every platform. Windows Media Player handles most 3GP files. For sharing old 3GP videos on modern platforms, convert to MP4 with fwip — the quality won't improve (you can't recover data that was never captured), but the file will play everywhere.
